Sixlip are a straight up, in your face hardcore band from Christchurch, New Zealand. They formed in 2003 and spent the early years whipping many pits into a frenzy before releasing their self titled EP in 2005 on independent Kiwi label Broken Hill Records. The following years saw Sixlip touring throughout Australia and New Zealand before recording their debut album "Know Who You Are" at Broken Hill Records studios in Christchurch with the legendary Nick Jett (Terror). "Know Who You Are" was released on PEE REC early 2009 and is a must for fans of Blacklisted, Comeback Kid and Terror.

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
New Zealand based band Sixlip sound less catholic than their hometown Christchurch. Founded in 2003, this in-your-face hardcore band released a first EP two years later. It took them until now to come up with their first longplayer Know Who You Are.
The nine featured tracks total only a good quarter hour, which shows that the band limits itself to the essentials and always comes straight to the point. With influences ranging from Terror to Comeback Kid, it’s obvious that Sixlip never try too hard to avoid certain clichés. Most songs start at a hectic, fast pace, slow down in the middle without ever losing anything of their brutality. Heavy riffs are succeeding one another, and more than once one feels reminded of classic NYHC, especially the grunted vocals and the gang shouts during the choruses. This band definitely wants to leave a street-wise impression. The New Zealanders are certainly not bad at what they do, but their macho attitude is therefore not more appropriate today as it was two decades ago. I like the idea of reducing the pauses between songs to a minimum, which lets the record come across as an entity.
I have never been the biggest fan of second generation classic hardcore, and therefore my enthusiasm is kept within bounds also on Know Who You Are. Although some parts occasionally know to please, I keep myself asking who Sixlip want to reach nowadays with this kind of music.

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
New Zealand didn't appear on my hardcore map so far, but that modern hardcore like COMEBACK KID, BLACKLISTED and MODERN LIFE IS WAR are familiar at the other side of the world proves with their debut "know who you are". Indeed they didn't reach the named heros, but the 9 songs in 16 minutes offer all trademarks, like moshparts, melodies and a overwehlming "Never give up" attitude, which reminds me of HAVE HEARTs "The Things We Carry". Conclusion: All in all a sucessfull debute, which doesn't reinvent the wheel, but should enthuse every fan of modern hardcore.

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
Nine tracks of damn impressive NZ hardcore. Full of breakneck riffs, this is an instant classic, a real tough, macho CD which will be really hard for other hardcore bands to beat. For fans of Comeback Kid and also Cruel Hand, this is on the heavier side of the hardcore scene. First it was the Aussies showing us up, now New Zealand are showing us how hardcore should be. From the opening track “Call To Arms” all the way through the pace is frantic and it doesn’t let up. Seriously do go and get hold of a copy of this album, it’s truly awesome, a hardcore masterpiece if you like. Sixlip need to come over to these shores and I for one would be right down the front with my fist in the air.

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
Since forming in 2003, Christchurch’s Sixlip have been active in the NZ hc scene, releasing 2 ep’s (‘Truth Be Told’ and s/t ‘Sixlip’) and their first full length ‘Know Who You Are’ on vocalist Chucky’s own label, Broken Hill Records. Actually to be truthful I don’t know you could really call it a full length. As with a lot of hardcore releases, ‘full length’ is more like an extended ep. Clocking in under 16 minutes makes for a fairly short affair. ‘Know Who You Are’ has been released in oz through Pee Records in advance of an upcoming visit to our shores. This current offering dishes up 9 polished tracks of energetic, modern hardcore. Lyrically positive, Sixlip’s messages cover topics ranging from self belief and empowerment, positive thinking, staying true to your beliefs and anger over relationship betrayal. ‘Call To Arms’ is the power driven battle cry that kicks things off. The anthem title track is guaranteed to get stuck in your head with the chorus “know who you are, not what you were, not what you could have been”. The build up in ‘Left For Dead’ peaks and rolls into one helluva adrenaline filled riff bound to have you psyched. The promo slip states “ for fans of Blacklisted, Terror and Comeback Kid”, which is a pretty spot on indication of what you can expect. Terror’s own Nick Jett played a major part in the finished product by fulfilling recording, mixing and mastering duties, which he has done very well. We will soon get to see Sixlip do their thing on the live front with their April Aussie tour fast approaching and playing host to a number of other great bands to fill the bill. ‘Know Who You Are’ is an impressive release that gets the thumbs up!!

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
WICKED INTRO!!! Hell YES!!! I live for reviewing this shit!!! If it wasn't for writing a zine I would know very little about the HxCx way of life. This is your classic NYHC stuff to a T. One of my favorite NYHC bands comes right to mind and that's SHUTDOWN. Canadian HC greats Comeback Kid have also been compared. Gotta love the fact the CD clocks in at 15min. It feels longer in a good way. I might add this band hails from NZ who’s HC scene is being exposed more and more over the years. You get everything you want with Sixlip if you are into gang vocals, head banging break downs, stage diving into huge pits. This is your wet dream!!! I wonder why so many hardcore bands use the Lion as a logo, I guess a lion is the symbol of hardcore, I guess... This is a split release between Pee Records and Broken Hill, which I believe is owned by one of the members. Another interesting fact is that Nick Jett (Terror) produced/recorded the album. Been years since I heard an album this impressive. Good job to all involved.

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
Another amazing hardcore offering from the other side of the globe - should I ever manage that 'holiday of a lifetime' to Australia, I know some of the cultural sights that I would take in is the hardcore scene in South Australia! Sixlip is a band with bags of attitude in the Our Time Down Here style of posi-hardcore. You can just imagine the blissful mayhem of one of their shows from the vibrant energy of this album. The songs are fast, the songs are short and right to the point, there is an earnest, honest energy in the vocals backed up with some kick-ass riffs. I dunno if this will turn up in any UK distros, or if you have to order it from Oz, but it would be a worthy prize for any collection.

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
Part of me wants to like this because Kiwis made it, but when the vocalist shouts, they sound like any American hardcore band. I think this would have been better if it was a hardcore record about native New Zealand topics like being a Shepard or zorbing. Or at least mentioned Wellington once in a while or something. Jeez.

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
Sixlip is a straight up hardcore band from Christchurch, New Zealand! Well, it's the first time that I'm writing a review for a whole record coming out of this country, but as far as I remember, I had some copies, a couple of years ago, of an awesome compilation that some buddies released there... so it seems that there's a cool punk / hardcore scene in New Zealand! Pete from Pee Records headquarters (South Australia) sent me the new Sixlip CD, called "Know Who You Are", which is co-produced with Broken Hill Records, a nice label from New Zealand.
Sixlip offer 9 songs of straight forward and fast hardcore music in the vein of Terror, Comeback Kid (excluding the emotional parts) and Blacklisted.
The record was produced by the legendary Nick Jett (Terror), so the whole result is just ace. The lyrics are about everyday life / struggle, personal issues and some more emotional stuff. All the packaging is cool and the cover is plain and nice! Go and check 'em out now!

SIXLIP - Know Who You Are
Sixlip is a four-piece hardcore band from Christchurch, New Zealand, which has been going at it since '03. They released an EP, did some touring and now recorded a record with Nick Jett (Terror-fame). "Know who you are" presents nine songs in 16 minutes. When I got this record and just looked at the artwork, I wasn't suspecting anything worthwhile. Probably some crappy mosh-band or something. But when I put it on for the first time, it wasn't all that bad to be honest. I can't say I'm really into the vocals and most of the cliché lyrics, but musically it's ok. If you're into Terror or Comeback Kid, you should give this record a try. Nothing special or new to expect: Heavy guitarwork, breakdowns, singalongs, it's all there. If you want to know what's going on at the other side of the world, check out Sixlip.
