PEE APPROVED Volume 3
This 26 track affair comes free when you purchase the latest issue of the great Pee Zine. This is the 3rd compilation the label has released free with the mag, and one of the best, you can't go wrong when things open up with Melbourne's A Death In The Family, one of the best new bands to hit my ears in a long time. A variety of styles is covered across the disc keeping things interesting, 5 of the tracks are previously unreleased and it's a nice mix of Aussie acts amongst the bigger US names. Bad Day Down, Away From Now, God So Loved The World and Latterman provide the early highlights, Love Equals Death and Mere Theory boost up the middle and rounding up the later highlights are Stolen Youth, The Loved Ones and With Honor. If you want a mix of names you know and a few you probably won't then this ones for you, but you better snap it up quick coz these sell like hotcakes, go head to www.peerecords.com to find out how to get your hands on one.

PEE APPROVED Volume 3
Adelaide-based label Pee Records has released the third instalment of its Pee Approved compilation, featuring 26 tracks from some of the best punk and hardcore talent around at the moment
Adelaide is well represented with strong offerings from rock outfit Mere Theory, melodic hardcore upstarts God So Loved The World, young melodic group Move To Strike, punk group Stolen Youth and hardcore quartet Prevail, as well as Pee Records bands Liability Of My Own, The Open Season and Line Of Departure.
The quality of Pee Approved Volume 3 is a vast improvement over past instalments with a consistant offering of diverse artists from around the world, which is saying something as Pee Approved Volume 2 was an enjoyable collection.
Highlights come from Brisbane's Bad Day Down with Australian Is Just A State Of Mind, Canada's Comeback Kid with the anthemic Wake The Dead and the melodic punk of The Loved Ones from the US with Jane.
Unreleased tracks from Melbourne's Another Way, New Zealand's Tempo 38 and Adelaide's Mere Theory are also great reasons to check out Pee Approved Volume 3.
Coming as a free compilation with purchase of issue 37 of Pee magazine, it is definitely worth hunting down. Check www.peerecords.com for more information.

PEE APPROVED Volume 3
As such, the only real way to assess this is with the lame, and ever so tiresome, "track-by-track" method. Brace yourselves! The way i'll do this is, analyse some of the best/worst songs out of 10. Then for an overall score, an average, wieghted to include the songs not discussed. Read: i will make a number up based on how i felt about the CD overall.
A Death In The Family - Scrape: Lies more at the rock end of this compilation, although still maintains the industry standard catchy vocals. 7/10
Another Way - Feet Of Clay: Hardcore. The screechy, yet growling vocals. Poorly done. Nothing special on this song at all, seemingly basic basic for vocals they scream "I tried being metal, but no one bought it". 1/10
Away From Now - Hit The Ground: See somethingFM's review of Away From Now's album, Blackout (which contains this track) to get an idea of how this band sounds. 7/10
Bad Day Down - Australian Is Just A State Of Mind: Loved this song, its one all about the lyrics, and it goes to show that when you spend a lot of time thinking that the average person out there is a complete idiot, along come a band telling you that there is still people out there 'thinking'! 8/10
Comeback Kid - Wake The Dead: Pure punk/rock. That sense of urgency in the drumming, and the vocals, including the odd gang vocal, just to really push the feeling over to the listener. Your more hardcore sounding band, without degenerating into garbage. 5/10
Dead Hearts - Brights Lights, Burnt City: Well, the instrumentation is good, but the vocals.....trying far to hard to sound angry. In my best art-critic wanker voice "I'm just not feeling it". Solid sound though, obvious talent behind the drums, . 4/10
God So Loved The World - No Mistake: Vocals kick out that remind me of a much younger, and much angrier Henry Rollins. Very cool. Good stuff 7/10
Latterman - Fear and Loathing on Long Island: Bit more accessable than other bands on the disc, Latterman have a more, energetic (in a seemingly happier) way than the more hardcore bands offer here. Genuine enthusiasm, energizing beats, good work. 7/10
Liability Of My Own - Dearest Darkest: see somethingFM's review of the Liability Of My Own EP, Vengeance Before Forgiveness (which contains this track) to see how we feel about this song. 1/10
Matchbook Romance - Fiction: This song, and well, from what i can tell, this band overall, are just plain emo. A sound thats staler than some of the shit in my backpack in year 9. 1/10
Prevail - Fight For It: Hardcore, as hard and as ....."core" as it comes. If thats your bag, go nuts. Prevail do it without sounding like complete prats. 5/10
Some Girls - Hot Piss: Fast and furious dirty punk rock. Loving it. Beyond, that, gotta love a band calling a song "Hot Piss". 7/10
Youthinasia - Mr Blisters: Catchy as hell Canadian punk sounds with some smooth vocals, real boozing song, singing along all that. the odd gang vocal to re-inforce that point. Bit on the softer side when compared to other artiss on the compilation. Hardcores up at the end, put does it tastefully. 9/10
RATING: 78 / 100

The Dwarf
PEE APPROVED Volume 3
The Pee Zine Compilation Vol. 3 showcases some good and not so good bands in metalcore, hardcore and punk. It features 26 artists with 5 previously unrealised tracks. There are a few bands that manage to push the envelope such as Some Girls but most you will find have pretty much been done.
"Hot Piss" by Some Girls is a great track fusing punk, hardcore and thrash. Singer Wes Eisold (Give up the ghost, XO skeletons) gives the song a very brutal and chaotic feel.
"Wake the Dead" by Comeback Kid. Comeback Kid are influenced by Gorilla Biscuits, Madball and Lifetime. With great lyrics, which is a rarity in hardcore. The guitars are thick and pack a good punch without being overly heavy, and the vocals are so energetic it will have you dancing all night. Too bad the song is only 3 minutes and 17 seconds long. "Like Trumpets" by With Honour sounds like a massive Bane rip off to me. But is still a good listen, I just would prefer to listen to Bane’s "The Note".
"Listening to Jane" by The Loved Ones its becomes evident that they are heavily influenced by Dillinger Four and the end result is an energetic rock n roll tune that will have you tapping you feat and be stuck in you’re head for days.
"Who To Trust" by Stolen Youth is a fast, tight, energetic punk rock, with hardcore influences. Which sounds similar to Anti-Flag, Rise Against and Strike Anywhere. The lead singer’s vocals have a raw side to them but in the recording come out very clear. It would be interesting to see this band live.
Previously unreleased "You Will Never Win" by Mere Theory is a good track but gets repetitive and boring. At times they can remind me of BoySetsFire. Though their modern brand of Australian rock is interesting and I am excited to hear more from this band.
"Feet Of Clay" by Another Way is a poorly recorded metallic hardcore track that feels as if it wants to go one step further towards a Converge or Botch but lacks the technical musicianship.
Listening to "Bright Lights, Burnt City" by Dead Hearts I get the feeling that with a better recording I would enjoy this but at the moment they sound like most other bands flooding the metal/hardcore markets. I advise listening to Modern Life Is War, This Is Hell or Most Precious Blood instead.
"Fear And Loathing in Long Island" by Latterman is a good track that feels like a more pop and hardcore take on Hot Water Music. It almost reminds me of Good Clean Fun, with an energetic feel that is undeniable.
"Dearest Darkness" by Liability Of My Own sounds like every other band flooding the charts riding the wave of Taking Back Sunday, The Used and Story Of The Years Fame. This song could easily be put in a TBS album without anyone asking any questions. It even has the trademark scream after the bridge. All in all it is a good mixture of punk and hardcore subgenres making it a very interesting listen.
